How do you insert a pie chart on a new spreadsheet in Excel?

I have to create a pie chart for a class based on a previous assignment where I made a fake expense report, and the instructions told me to use the numbers (totals) and create a pie chart. Well, I started a new blank worksheet (with the empty cells) and selected the pie chart to insert, and then the style I wanted. It wouldn't insert it on my worksheet. I'm basically looking at a blank sheet with no pie chart on it. How do I insert it on my new worksheet so I can put the information on it the way I am supposed to? Help Please! Thank you in advance!

You start by putting the data in the sheet (put the labels down 1 column and the numbers next to them.), highlight the area and then insert the chart.
