If i buy a used car from a private party a few hundred miles from me how do i legally drive the car back to be registered in my state of PA. I called insurance company and they said they cant give me coverage until it is registered however the person who owns the car from when i buy it from them should have insurance to cover me on the way back. Is this true?

  1. First of all, how are you driving the car home without a legal registration?  You can't just put a tag on a car and drive it!  If you are using the seller's tag, his insurance should cover you...if you have a temp. or transport PA tag, then your exhisting ins. covers you for a day or so, until you call them.

  2. Try another insurance comp> If you have a car already than your insurance should cover it> If not??If i sold some 1 a car I will not have coverage on it for them>Get the info for the seller contact the ins comp will all the info>Then see if they will cover you if you pay them>Till you reg it>

  3. get a different company since you can get coverage over the phone in ten minutes. you just need to tell them the make, model, year, vin number.

  4. i would get a new insurance company NOW! your insurance follows you in any car you drive. technically for the first 48 hours until the previous owner releases liability for the car, you are borrowing it so your insurance should cover it. but if you called them and they said they would not, ask the seller to maintain the insurance for a short period until you transfer title.

  5. I would call geico again I think you may have gotten a hold of someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.  Every car I have ever purchased was from an individual and I have called geico with the VIN before picking up the vehicle in order to obtain insurance on the car.  Remember not all representatives know what they are talking about.

Also no they previous owners insurance will not provide any coverage on the way home as it is prudent for the seller to immediatly end his coverage to protect himself from liability.

  6. Who is your ins. co.? Most will cover you for a car purchase for a few days until you get it registered in your name as long as you are in good standing with them

  7. If you already own a car & have a policy then your insurance company must cover you from the point of the sale - ONLY up to the lower amount that you have - like when we bought our truck we only had liability so we were kinda in "trouble" but only driving 15 miles (or 20) home so we didn't sweat it - then I called them right away and we were covered :)

    HTH  PS I'm in Misouri!

  8. get hold of the manager and tell them you are purchasing a  car and want to insure it on the chassis number. This is what I always do although it might sometimes be cheaper to get it transported home and then just get a normal insurance once it is registered.
