Question:

How do you introduce yourself in a class?

I started taking grad courses, I am usually shy and keep very much to my self. But in our first class we were to introduce ourselves to the class and say something interesting about us. Everyone in that class is a teacher except for me. I am a substitute teacher. The interesting part about me which I thought would be interesting was saying that I am a parent of four children and one with Down Syndrome. I think this is interesting because our grad course is Special Education. I felt that I caught everyone attention, but that was it. No questions, no comments, but I felt as if I didn't fit in. It made me feel awkward. Was it proper to share that part of my life with the class or not? I don't know how to interact with other people, I guess that's why I am a substitute because I deal only with students. Thanks for the advice

  1. Well, from what you're saying here, it would have sounded interesting to me if I had been in the class with you.  It is odd that no questions about your DS child came up in a course about Special Education, but maybe those questions will come up in time.  Don't sweat it - just be yourself and things will be just fine.
