How do you judge between a good and a bad translation?

  1. to judge between a good and a bad translation, i will see the structure of the sentences. If the structure of sentences is wrong  the text translated is bad. If the structure is well the translation is good.


  2. if the substance translated conveys the same meaning as the original..id think it has been properly translated..if not,then not.

  3. If the natives laugh (such as when I say "Ich bin ein Berliner"), then the translation probably wasn't good.

    I remember one other translation that fell short of the mark.  It was in the movie Das Boot, with English subtitles.  At one point, the Captain took the submarine below maximum safe depth as a test, and it started leaking as bolts started popping on the hull. One bolt struck a crewman in the arm, and the screen showed him bleeding profusely as the Captain asked for a damage report.  

    In German, the response was "Wasser kommt rein", or "Water's coming in."  The subtitles underneath this bleeding arm read "It's leaking badly."
