How do you jump for figure skating?

I'm starting up with a coach in a little bit but I want to brush up on my jumps. The only problem is, I've almost completely forgotten how. I used to take skating lessons but since I broke my leg, I couldn't practice for the longest time and now I haven't been skating in nearly 9 month ;_; What are some basics to jumping? [simple jumps] What edge to work on, how far to bend your knees, what your legs are doing. and how to thrust yourself into the air withOUT hurting yourself...

  1. There is a waltz jump you skate forward bend your knees and jump and land on the other foot!

  2. The basic (single) jumps are waltz jump, (cherry)flip, loop, salchow, lutz and axel (being the hardest).

These don't really involve 'thrusting yourself into the air'.

The walz and axel are both jumps where you take off on your left outer edge going forward.

The loop is backwards outside right edge. The salchow is backwards left inside edge. Lutz is backwards left outside edge and then a right toe pick (make sure to stay on the left outside edge or it's a flip).

As previously mentioned the waltz jump is the easiest jump to complete. Only half a rotation. And at the beginning you can take off with two feet if you'd like. Skating forward in a large left circle, jump slightly into the air, bringing your right kneww up, and your hands crossed on your chest (not too tight as your only doing half a rotation). Once your in the air, push that right leg straight down to land on and extend your arms to maintain balance upon landing. It's good to start with this jump to build up your confidence. The key to landing any jump is posture. You want to make sure your nice and tall and you keep your body vertical. Any lean will usually cause you to fall or land with a cheat (two feet on the ground). Also, your momentum will make the jump easier. If your skating too slow, they will be difficult. Timing is also key. If someone on the ice is landing these jumps, ask if you can jump beside them and follow their timing. Also standing back watching them is also very helpful.

A tip to practice without huring yourself do them off ice. Once you have your posture mastered (keeping yourself vertical) you can start them on ice.

It's going to hurt, but just keep trying, you'll get them.

    Good luck!!!!
