I have a small tank that used to be home to a goldfish. He died and I have since cleaned out the tank thoroughly (there are no other fish in it). I'm thinking of getting a betta to put in the tank but need a bit of information first...

can i put the betta in this tank?

does the temperature need to be monitored or anything?

can i feed it ordinary goldfish flakes or tropical flakes?

what does 'freshwater' mean and is it any different to 'coldwater'?

thankyou!

  1. The Betta is a very easy fish to keep and don't require much since they actually live in mud puddles in Siam.  They like smaller homes and don't require filtration but you should make sure they're homes kept livable and water should be at least room temp.  The term 'freshwater' means it's got no salt.  You have 'salt water' which is like you would find in the ocean and you have 'freshwater' like you would find in a lake or a river.

They usually get along ok with other fish as long as it's not another Betta, male or female, it doesn't matter.  You can get specific food just for Betta's and they seem to do well off it.

  2. ok frist u can put in that tank it want hurt it!

    i should be luke warm.

ok try to find betta food if not it should not hurt until u find it.

freshwater mean  that reg. not salt water that mean it NOT A SALT WATER FISH reg water well be ok! the food GO WITH THE BOTTLE THAT HAS A BETTA ON IT!

  3. If the tank is 2 1/2 gallons or over, it will be suitable for a Betta.  If it is smaller, you may consider getting one that size.

Yes, you should monitor the temperatures.  Bettas are freshwater (as opposed to salt water) and tropical (as opposed to cold water) fish.  Since they are tropical fish, they need the temperature warm, and you need to make sure it is in a good range for them.  Ideally, their range of temperature should be 76-82 degrees F.  You will probably need a heater to attain this temperature.

No, do not feed it ordinary flakes.  The reason is that Bettas are carnivores, and so they need special Betta food, be it pellets or flakes, with occasional treats such as bloodworms.  Variety is always best.  I feed my Betta Hikari Betta Pellets, Betta Flakes, and Bloodworms.

  4. Bettas are tropical freshwater fish. Freshwater applies to the salinity in that there is none as opposed to Saltwater/Marine. Coldwater refers to temperature as opposed to tropical. The temperature will need to be monitored, bettas need heated filtered tanks and the temperature to generally be a constant temp between 75-80F.

Bettas do best on Betta specialist pellets or tropical flakes, supplemented with live foods such as bloodworm, they are prone to overfeeding problems though and their diet needs to be carefully monitored.

What kind of tank is this that you were thinking of?

  5. Freshwater means water without salt. Coldwater and tropical are the two different types of freshwater. Coldwater means, well, cold- water. Tropical water is heated, (you need a heater). For Siamese fighters, you need . not a big tank, but one around 10L in size. If you are getting a male, then don't buy two, (they fight) and if you choose to get a male fighter, don't buy any females, as the male will pester the female constanly to mate and could stress it out. I would suggest getting a couple of females as they are really nice. Have fun xx x

  7. you can put the Betta in the tank with no problems but you have to keep it alone I find for my Betta (striker) I have him in a 5 gal. tank with a small cave with 3 openings in it if he wants out I have the lights dimmed for him I have a heater keeping the tank at 78 F but he also enjoys 80 F I would stick to giving him Betta food once a day and Blood Worms as a special treat once a week instead of food live plants and silk plants (NO SHARP EDGES) and change the water I do 25% once a week I also tape a mirror on the outside of the tank so he can Flare and show his reflection who is who and it builds him up and gives you a good show also pick a good name for him and repeat it bye him for Striker knows his name and comes when I call him to the edge of the tank

  8. yes, you can put the betta in this tank. you just have to make sure that you clean it regularly.

for most fish, the temperature should be monitored but bettas are a bit hardier so they're a little bit more forgiving when it comes to temperature fluctuations.

you can feed it goldfish flakes if it will eat it. some bettas are picky-eaters and prefer specialized betta food or bloodworms. you can also feed it tropical flakes. bettas ARE tropical fish so as long as they are willing to eat flakes then that is fine.

there are 2 types of freshwater fish. one is coldwater and the other is tropical [warm water]. the coldwater group includes goldfish and koi while the tropical group includes bettas, livebearers, plecos, cory cats, barbs, etc.
