How do you keep a black velvet Horseback riding helmet clean?

  1. I lightly spray mine with a fine mist of water and use a shop vaccum. I use a hard case plastic for practicing and save the velvet for shows.


  2. put it in steam from a kettle (not too close) and use a gentle brush to lift the velvet pile.

  3. After you have cleaned it (the methods listed sound good), you can purchase a helmet cover at your local tack store, or online. A cover will protect the helmet while you are not using it, and while you are training. You can take the cover off for shows. There are even waterproof covers for riding in the rain, but most are spandex like material.

  4. personally i've rode a horse like only 5 times so i dont have a clue.

  5. Charles Owen makes a hat cleaner and a deodorizer. They both work like magic. They're a little pricey, though.

    If you want to save money, though, I'd go with the suggestions above, with the water. Also schooling in a plastic helmet is always good.

  6. I just rub mine with a clean towel.  the dirt comes right off... I've never had to do anything different
