How do you keep a travel journal?

What do you write on? Your sensory experience? Your conversations? Your feelings? I'm off to Peru soon and know I will holistically experience so much and I want to record as much as possible, which leads me back to the question of what do I document?

  1. Online is definately the way to go to save having to carry something around with you everywhere, and there should be an internet cafe easily available.

If you really would like it as a keepsake, when you get back, you can buy specifica journals for travel stories, you could copy your online blog into that

  2. well thats a toughie.  Firstly - I'd highly recommend that you keep one on line as well as on paper - you can tell your friends and relatives about it and then you won't have to email them all the same stuff every few days!

Well - remembering my travels I tend to remember various stories quite well but often struggle to remember my emotions at the time. Stories are the best things (dinner party conversation and such) - I would write down any anecdotes that occur and also try to write down how you were feeling during the events.  Also, keep maps, tickets and small soviegniers (like an unusual feather, bizzare sweet wrappers etc!) and business cards of hotels and hostels and keep them all too. Then you can make a scrapbook when you get home.

Also be sure to keep a contact book with names, second names and emails. You'll meet so many people out there - but all to often you end up writing their names down on some piece of paper as they jump on to departing bus which you then later lose!  Plus add some stuff about them in your diary to remind yourself who they were and what they were like.

    enjoy Peru!

  3. Peru will not offer you the opportunity to keep an online journal!  What is that person thinking?

I keep a journal each time I travel.  I go to a book store and purchase a blank journal that will accommodate my needs (like pockets, for ex.)  I take my journal with me EVERYWHERE!  I sit somewhere and I write my feelings  and emotions, I also sketch what I see (I'm no artist)  it helps me remember the place in my mind's eye once I return.  I keep a dictionary of new vocabulary I learn.  I keep track of the pics I take by writing a little something in the journal each time I click the camera.  Take time to be in a quiet place and focus on where you are and the emotions the place makes you feel...

Journaling is TERRIFIC!  If you can, do stone rubbing, with the side of a pencil,if you find cool engravings.  Bring a glue stick,  press flowers or other vegetation....The possibilities are endless!  Have a blast and buena suerte!
