Question:

How do you keep fleas away?

I have 3 flea related questions!

I used to own a Golden Retriever/Labrador mix when I was younger and bathed her with a shampoo that guaranteed flea and tick free for up to a month! But 5-7 days later she was infested with fleas and my mother panicked and got rid of her. So now that I'm older and wiser I want to get a new dog...

#1.) Is there a REALLY good flea and tick product(s) out there that is SURELY guaranteed to keep the bugs away for at least a month after treatment? What is it called?

#2.) Can a puppy (2 months+) use it? If not, is there a GOOD flea treatment for puppies?

#3.) Even if your dog does end up catching fleas and releases them into the house, is there an alternative to getting rid of the pests other than expensively spraying the house with a pest treatment? (i.e. calling Terminex or Orkin to spray the home with chemicals....which is expensive)

  1. Everything Mollie said ! Good luck

  2. I have started using Advantage Multi that is for internal and external parasites as well as heartworm on my Great Dane for the past 7 months and I haven't seen a single flea. Yes it can be used on 2 month old dogs.

  3. Dawn dishwashing liquid! Vets recommend it. Kills the fleas and won't harm your pup.

    1. that one

    2. yes

    3. Wash the house, fleas drown easily, just clean the house like you would normally do but with more water. (might be harder on carpet)

  4. I'm sorry about your dog. My mom uses beer to keep fleas and ticks away. It not only keeps them away but it kills them, too. Any beer will do. But you shouldn't use it on puppies younger than 1 month.

  5. When you take your pup to the vets for it's 1st ck up and shots and stool check (for parasites) talk to the vet about a flea product for the pup.  And yes a 2 month old pup can be put on flea meds.  Also don't forget about once a month heart-worm meds too.  I have never ever had a flea problem, not ever, while I am treating my 2 dogs with a flea product from the vets office.  It is worth the money to have a good product that works.  Find out by talking to the vet which product will be right for you and your puppy.  They have lots to choose from.  If you use a good product on your dog you will never have to ever treat your house.  Not ever.  I promise you...  The flea products go by the weight of your dog.  I have been using flea products, like Advantix, Advantage, Frontline for years and years.  I don't mind paying money for a product if it works.  Some even take care of ticks and internal parasites also.  Hope I helped you.

  6. Ultraguard at walmart is pretty good. It's $5 for one tube and works for about a month, my dogs had horrible fleas before and now they are fine. the best flea medication is more expensive and you can get it at your vets office. Frontline-Advantage*-others on commericals. Usually puppies cant use flea treatment but garlic pills or powder can help but they will stink,  lol. I have all hardwood floor which keeps the fleas away. Fleas can end up in your house even if your pet doesnt have them. My sunt sprays this stuff around just the doorways of her house to keep the fleas away. Good luck!
