  1. I keep a few skeins of yarn for my son's knifty knitter, but seriously, most of it goes right into the Goodwill bag as soon as the project is done. Otherwise it's just hoarding and adds to the clutter.

    .

  2. Type and color  and kept in zip lock bags ;)))

  3. i store my knitting wool, tatting & crochet yarn, embroidery skeins, silk threads, sewing reels, satin ribbons, etc. all in different transparent plastic boxes or cardboard boxes [with labels] or organisers depending on my usage. boxes are very easy to stack & store & handle. [i do that even with my paints]

i use zip-seal pouches or wicker baskets while knitting/ crocheting /tatting. that way the balls don't roll away or get knotted.

i also keep an annual list [end of season list especially for wool] of all the types of yarn i have left - the color, the batch, & quantity/weight. this way i know what i have left & what (& how much) i need to buy...

of course, i generally buy a little extra than that required for the pattern so as not to run out of that particular sample midways.

lastly, if i have enough yarn, i knit/crochet motifs for quilts, doilies, table mats or bedspreads. this takes care of the odd-lots, saves on space & storage & since each motif is small, i don't tire/get bored, and when i have collected a sufficient number [it may take months or years too], i arrange/color-coordinate them & join to make a large quilt.

If you have more wool or yarn left you can also make some bigger accessories such as a tea cozy, etc. to finish off the odd-lots. or use different color yarns in strip patterns, chevron knits, etc.

    hope these help

    all the best

  4. I've heard that the best way is to take gallon-size zip-lock bags and put the yarn or project in it along with a copy of the pattern.  Then you label it with yarn type, project name, and whatever else you want to write down in case you forget.

For me personally, I am still disorganized when it comes to yarn.  They are all mixed up in boxes with my fabric and trims.
