How do you keep your dishes clean without hot water

the gas is off temporarily. is there something that can sanitize them after washing in cold water?

Pour 1/4 cup of bleach in the wash water.  That should kill the germs.

Your hands can't handle water hot enough to have any sanitizing effect.

hot versus cold only loosen up certian type of soil beter. If you have been washing by hand all along just make sure the dishes are good and dry and you wont see a difference. If you have been using a dish washer. Most dish washer heat there own water. it just takes longer to cycle if they start with cold water.

Try putting a tablespoon of bleach in the water when you wash them. That should kill any germs.

Use bleach to sanitize.  It is going to be really hard to remove any cooking oils however.  If you have a barbecue grill you could heat some water on it in a pot.  Or if you have a coffee maker heat a couple pots on there.  Good luck, you will really be ready for you gas to be turned back on by all the extra work!  :-)
