Question:

How do you kill mushrooms?

These mushrooms are growing in a downstairs bedroom. I recently removed an old a/c unit. It was leaking inside instead of out. The next day I see these mushrooms right under the window. They look like regular mushrooms that you buy at the grocery, but much smaller in size. I have to kill them! Does anyone have a remedy for this disgusting problem? Should I steam clean this or will it make it worse?

  1. Bleach *can* kill mold, but chances are that a strong fan blowing air at a 30 degree angle across the wall with the mushrooms and a dehumidifier in the room will clear the issue up.

Make sure to pull the mushrooms out first, or when they dry they will sporulate and you will have spores everywhere in that room, just waiting for the relative humidity to be just right.

You should also have someone check out the wall that the mushrooms are growing from. Many mushrooms are cultivated on hard and soft wood, and the mushrooms you have can do serious structural damage to the wood stud.

I'd like to mention that not all fungi is bad, and in fact most of it is good and necessary. With that said, your instinct was still accurate: just because it looks like it came from the grocery store does NOT mean that you should try eating it. We very seriously say in mycology: When in doubt, Throw it out!

  2. try bleach.

  3. Try spaying the area with a strong solution of black tea.  Tea has a chemical that kills any kind of fungus.
