How do you know a watermelon is ripe?

Katie is correct; also, with other fruits like oranges or peaches, smell it.  If it smells like the fruit itself, then it's ripe.  If it just smells like leaves or plants or something, then it's not ripe.  Also, avocados are ripe when you press them lightly and their skin feels soft.

If you knock on it it is hallow sounding

smell it does it smell like a head of fresh lettuce  is it soft or hard

push it with your thumb does it indent  ? if it does don't get it ! sometimes you just have to chance it !
