I got my first speeding ticket ever, and I was going about 70 in a 65 area, but they pegged me for a 79... which is just rediculous what kind of moron drives 80... anyways can't fight the law on this one even though there is no way I was going that fast. The cop was nice though maybe their equipment is just retarded... anyway she said I could just mail the fine somewhere... but now looking at the ticket it doesn't say how much it is, how do I find out?

  1. If you were only doing 70 go to court and dispute it, most judges will at least cut the fine in half if you show up and may recall the ticket altogether if you say you were doing 70 and apologize for going that much over but you were sure you weren't doing 79 because you know you would never go that fast. Just be polite, respectful and use as few words as possible. The judge will likely let you off.

As for how much it is... In Oregon speeding tickets start about $200 and go up from there. 15 over would probably be $200 here, 5 over gets thrown out of court (meaning you are forgiven)... don't know about any other states though.

I strongly recommend you go to court.

  2. The amount of the fine will depend on the statutes in your state.

You could call the prosecutor or court clerk and request a date change for your appearance although they are not obligated to give it.

The court date is more important than attending your class.  You can't go to jail for cutting a class.

  3. The only thing "retarded" here is your "question" and remarks. Just suck it up and accept you were speeding and CALL THE DEPT you got a ticket with and just ASK what the fine is.

EDIT: Obviously you were and didn't realize it. We hear that every day-"I wasn't going that fast". Our radar guns don't lie.  Like I already stated, call the department that gave you the ticket and ask what the fine is.  Then you have 2 options-pay it or go to court on the date given to you. Its that easy. As far as changing the court date, just call the dept. and request a continuance. They will then let you know in writing when your new court date will be. I ALWAYS recommend attending court. Even if you are found guilty, the fine can be reduced.

  4. A little attitude there?

Can't answer your question without knowing where you are.  Fines vary between states and at least in California, even a little bit between counties.

I'd suggest calling the court you were cited into.

In California, it normally works like this:

    1–15 MPH Over Limit = 146.00

    16–25 MPH Over Limit = 266.00

    ≥ 26 MPH Over Limit = 380.00
