  1. Traditional amount is 15%, but a higher amount has become more common especially if the service was good.  The 10% suggested by some responders would be very cheap.

To calculate 15%, look at the total bill, move the decimal to the left one digit, then add half of that again.  To calculate 20%, move the decimal to the left one digit and double the amount.

    For example, if the bill is $40, a 15% tip would be $4 + $2 or $6, a 20% tip would be $4 times 2 or $8

  2. FYI  most cell phones have an easy tip calculator on them. usually under tools or extras or something. It is usually 10 % or 15% of the ticket.

  3. The average is 15 to 20% If you cannot do the math use a calculator or carry a tip chart.

  4. It depends on the restaurant. If I am at the diner usually 10% which is nothing more than moving the decimal one place to the left so my bill is 25.00 the tip would be $2.50. But if I am eating somewhere nice like Red Lobster and my bill is 50.00 usually i'll leave a $10.00 tip. which is 20% by doing that you take the 10% of 50.00 which is $5.00 and double it to get 10. But of course if the server is rude then he or she will not get a good tip. Generally the average tip is supposed to be 15%. So if your bill is $60 then 10% of that is $6 half of 6 is 3 add the 6+3 and you'll get 9 so it would be a $9 tip for a $60 meal if I were to leave a 15% tip.

  5. The usual tip is 15% and 20% or more for outstanding service. The easiest way to calculate this is move the decimal and add half again for 15% or multiply by two and move the decimal for 20%. Please keep in mind many servers don't even make minimum wage and are required to report their tips to "wage up" to $6.55/hr for tax purposes. Many times they have to report 10%-15% of the total food sales for the shift, and sometimes they don't make that much. Also many servers are required to "tip out" the bussers, bartenders and other support staff leaving them with only a portion of what they actually collected and reported.

  6. I think it's 10%.

Yeah you will notice that most of the poeple saying 15% or more have worked in this feild, they are just being greedy.

Though I do give more than 10%, I don't think someone should get $15 dollars for a $100 dollar meal.

A place like that I'm sure pays their people well, but then you could probably afford to pay them that much eating at a place like that.

So I would say it's really up to you.

If I go to a Mom & Pop diner, I usually give the waitress $3 dollars for a $13 dollar meal for 2 people.

    Thats almost 25%.
