How do you know if a restaurant is use MSG or not?

All you have to do , is ask them, they will tell you ,  other than that,  they usually put it on the menu, and let you know,  just liike peanuts,  the reason is,  

there are people that are allergic to msg  and they dont want to have them sue them, if they eat the food and they have the reaction,  

so they are glad to give up the information,   for their own protection,

You can ask; around here most Chinese restaurants have it on their menus No MSG or a sign by the register for carry-out.

perhaps it's not occurred to you, maybe just ask.  not like they will hide it from you.  MSG (a natural product) is generally added to many chinese food dishes to enhance flavor.  in america expect to find MSG (Adolph's Meat Tenderizer) in steakhouses, and on fries in fastfood places.

normally chinese food contain msg. but nowadays restaurants usually post NO MSG on their window or better yet on their menus. i hope that's true though. and for those who don't post anything, maybe just ask before you order or get seated and hope they're telling the truth :)

i guess you can ask the employees at the restaurant. but they're not always upfront with you. i get reactions from eating foods with msg in them. on several occasions, i've specifically asked the server to prepare my food without msg but they disregarded my request.

i wonder how they can avoid using msg when lot of the seasonings or sauces they use are pre made and contain msg in them already.  

unless they have some sort of verbiage on their menu or a sign posted somewhere at the restaurant claiming that they do not use msg, i wouldn't trust their word.

no one has died from having an allergic reaction from consuming msg and no one probably will. so these restaurants will continue to use msg as a flavor enhancer and will get away with not being completely truthful with their customers.

You can ask the waiter to ask the chef. Chinese restaurants usually use MSG in their food.
