Question:

How do you know if a speeding ticket carries points?

What are the chances of a NYS speeding ticket not carrying any points? There is no mention of them on the ticket, except that if you had 21 MPH or more in excess (I had 14), you get 6 points.

Can the officer decide this or is it automatic once you plead guilty?

  1. Well in PA. The licensing center will send a notice. Because the cops don't "actually" PUT the points on your license. The ticket is reported to the company that renews your license and it is a set point value for so many miles.

From the new york website i found this:

Speeding (1-10 MPH over posted limit): 3 points

Speeding (11-20 MPH over posted limit): 4 points

Speeding (21-30 MPH over posted limit): 6 points

Speeding (31-40 MPH over posted limit): 8 points

Speeding (more than 40 MPH over posted limit):

                      11 points

Cops CAN code a ticket not to give you any points BUT you would have to ask the officer before you signed the ticket or before he had time to enter into his system. More often then not. Tickets carry points.

YOU can fight the ticket by pleading not guilty and going to the judge and saying you weren't speeding blah blah blah you are willing to pay the fine but would like the points removed from your license. OF course if you speed constantly well, that won't work.

And BTW the points are automaticlly added to your license once you plead guilty.

    Good luck!

  2. The legislature of New York has already decided which infractions carry points and how much.  You need to look up the relevant statute and see how many points are given for each speed.

  3. the insurance co will decide the points
