How do you know if corns are ready for harvesting?

Sweet corn is ready to harvest when the silk on the ear is just starting to dry, the kernels are plump, yellow, and soft.  Field corn can be used as a substitute for sweet corn until the kernels start to harden.

Field corn is ready for harvest when the kernels are hard and usually dimpled, and the stalk has turned brown and thoroughly dried.
