  1. Ingrown toenails are cause by many things: tight shoes, obesity, heredity---all sorts of causes. The edge of the toenail will dig into th soft tissue of the large toe, causing severe pain, swelling and even infection. The treatment is easy enough--the podiatrist or doctor cuts out the part of the nail that is digging down into your toe and sometimes applies a little acid on the nail bed to keep the nail from growing in that direction. The toe is numbed before treatment, so it doesn't hurt. Having it done makes it a whole lot easier to walk and prevents further problems.

    Go see a podiatrist for treatment.
