How do you know if you've got what it takes to be a comedian?

I've thought about it before...

But I'm the type that will say something funny about something someone else said...And I do it all the time and people think I'm really funny. But I don't think I could just stand up on stage and make jokes..

So how does someone know if they'd make a good comedian..not just making their friends laugh, without actually putting on a show?

If you have actual material that's not based on other people. If you can say something funny without someone else saying something first. If you can write a show about funny observations. It takes a lot. If you're serious about it you can join a comedy troop and go around with them building an audience.
