How do you know someone wants to get back together with you?

Are there any surefire signs to watch for if someone wants to date you again? Granted this is a long-distance thing (deployed to Afghanistan), and we have starting exchanging emails everyday. (He told me the rebound relationship is on the rocks). I truly care about him and want to tell him, but I have enough respect to give him space right now until it's over. How can I tell if he truly wants to get back together?
