  1. you can get an ofsted report for the school, contact your local council

  2. www.ofsted.gov.uk

It has lists of school and their inspection details. But I'd also go visit to make sure its as good in person!

It goes Poor, Satisfactory, good and excellent...there the ratings! It normally explains why they got the rating too so you can see if its a major issue!

  3. Wouldn't go too much on the rating.  I say this all the time, a school near home is the best.  No traveling time, local friends are much better than faraway friends and no travel costs (or cheap)

  4. just listen to your kid .if he/she is talks about whats goin on at school and is showing a generally positive attitude thats a good sign. if your kid shows signs of being unhappy at school 9 times out of ten there is a good reason , although they may not want ot tell you. its sometimes its about the teachers but more often than not its other kids preventing your kid from enjoying their education. you get good years you get bad years. We dont teach our kids other kids do  seriously!!!. It doesntmatter how good the school is its all about the other kids,  the cohort your child is sharing their life with, they will have more effect on your childs development than any other source.your kid only gets one chance at a decent education   if you think that they are unhappy or not living up to your expectations of them .....really dont hesitate  to change schools

  5. You can check on www.greatschools.net or on your state's department of education website to see what "grade" the school received for the last round of testing. The grades are usually A, B, C, with A being the highest rating.  Sometimes parents leave information about the school on greatschool also. That will give you some information about the school, but it will not tell the whole story.

The best way to find out about the school is to make an appointment to visit the school and talk with the principal and some of the faculty.  You can also talk with your neighbors about the schools their children attend. Is the school neat and clean? How do the teachers talk to the students in the halls? Will they let you visit a classroom on your child's grade level?

Do you feel welcome and comfortable there?

You can also do an internet search for the school or the school district to view the school's webpage.

  6. OFSTED - Office for Standards in Education (British)

    http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/

  7. You can get OFSTED reports on ;ocal schools and look at the published league tables. These will give you facts and figures which don't really tell you the essence of the school. I like to visit the schools and speak to the Head and teachers, whilst you are doing this you will see children around the school and can assess whether they are happy, disciplined, busy etc. Also go onto a playground and get into conversation with parents, you gain a lot of insight about the school this way.
