How do you know when to change wheel bearings?

I was at Sam's Club the other day and this Asian kid suggests that I change the wheel bearings because I've got a bad stud on my civic (pre-stripped). If there's no noise, is he just BS'ing me and all I need is to get the stud replaced?

  1. yea he has to be BSing you, you replace or repack wheel bearings after your tires have been submerged in water for extended periods of time, if mud or dirt has been around them for an extended period of time, there may also be a unique squeal or grinding noise coming from them, or if the oil is bearing grease looks dirty, I repack mine every other time I do my breaks
