How do you know when to pull up onions, shallots, etc?

  1. You can pull up onions when they are the desired size, or before the frost hits in the late fall. As a tip for storage, never wash them. Store them with the dirt still on them in a dry cool place like a cold storage or in a basement. Washing them will cause them to rot.

    You can also leave on to develope flowers and seeds for next years crop. Remember not to plant onions in the same place, year after year. Onions take particular nutreints from the soil, so if you do the soil will get weaker and weaker every year you plant in the same spot of land. It is good t Rotate them with other "onion friendly" plants.

    I'm not formilar with Shallots but I imagine that they are simular to onions. Anyway, best of luck!
