Question:

How do you know when your child is ready to potty train?

My 13m son has very good bladder control and will actually hold off peeing until naked time so he can watch the stream come out. I've heard you should start potty training the summer before kids turn 2, if they are ready. Well, summer is coming soon, but I feel like he is too young, except the bladder control. He understands everything we say, but has limited vocab needed to vocalize his need to pee.... Please note: I'm not in any hurry, I just want to know how you know they are ready to learn?

  1. They start to become ready when they can sleep through the night with a dry diaper.  Once they have control of their sphincter muscles training will be easier for them and you also.

  2. knows before/when/after he goes...

knows terms: pee, p**p, potty, p***s

    dry through night and naptime

u could try... i would start with underwear w/ his favorite character on them... say "these are only for big boys and "so-so" will be sad if u p**p or pee on him/her...

or use the "sink the cheerios" method... w/ boy and the power of the p***s there are endless games you can make 2 help them learn how to pee in the potty...

since he loves watching his urine stream.... i would buy him a training urinal... so he can watch his pee stream and not make a mess...

  3. yes

  4. It sounds like he might be ready. Get a potty and put him on it when he does that thing you said he does. When I trained my son I had 3 potty`s. I had 1 in the bathroom, 1 in the living room, and 1 his room, lol. But he would run to the closest one. Then shortly after that, he wanted to use the big potty, the bathroom. It doesn`t hurt to try. He'll let you know if he's ready.
