All of the Oceans connect, but is there a specific lat/long that has been decided when they start and stop? If so, where?

  1. idk where and stuff. but i do know that the oceans are known as different ones bc of the amt. of salt or something.. i think.

  2. There are five oceans -  the Antarctic, Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.

All five oceans are connected - who can say where one ocean stops and the next ocean starts?

  3. Ocean boundaries are determined by geographic coordinates much like political (land) boundaries.  Ocean boundaries are based on proximity to land boundaries.  Also, water currents can help determine an ocean's boundary.

Another consideration is the surface area (sea floor).  The Atlantic Ocean follows the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, an underwater mountain chain that forms the spine of the ocean.  The Continental Shelf, a shallow ocean-covered extension of the  continents extends out a few hundred miles and can be a factor in determining ocean boundaries.
