  1. Well you could start by applying.

Or if you're not ready to apply to college yet, there are other ways to get the attention of universities. Participate in educational summer camps and programs offered by universities, as well as online enrichment programs like EPGY. You could also participate in a talent search like Duke University's Talent Identification Program (TIP). I did this in 7th grade. They gave you the opportunity to take the SAT with the highschoolers on a given test date, and if you scored well you recieved state or national recognition, and TIP sent your name out to other programs (like People to People Student Ambassadors, EPGY at Stanford, etc) and then so many doors will open. I got State Recognition when I did it in 7th grade and pretty soon I was getting letters from colleges across the country inviting me to participate in summer programs, early admittance programs, independent study on campus, the student ambassador program (which I did). I was offered a scholarship to a private college prep school, invited to spend a summer at Cambridge University in England. It was crazy! I just wish I walked through more of these doors that opened for me. Definitely give something like that a try!

  2. Sign up to take the PSAT, SAT, or ACT.  You can report your scores to like 5 or 6 colleges for free.

  3. Great answer i-come-from...

Similar story for my son -  Is part of one of the talent search programs, gets invited every year to a top college open house / recruitment day (and we go - they keep track), attends at least one educational camp every summer on a university campus - taught by university profs.

Essentially, the colleges are not going to just find you... you have to engage in activities that will get you noticed.  Look at academic contests, scholarships, etc.

I list below some links that might help - The four regional talent search programs (including Duke TIP), online academic portfolio, contests & scholarship notification.

  4. You make an application.

It might be a good idea to take the SAT or ACT test and also file that final score.

You may have to provide a transcript of your work.

You will have to take the Math and English placement tests.

  5. How do colleges typically know most students, regardless of where they do their education? Through the application process. The bulk of students enrolled in college aren't there because the colleges "knew they were out there" and invited them, except through their applications.
