Question:

How do you like your tofu?

I'm a complete tofu novice. I have just bought ''Organic Original Tofu'' (the brand name is Cauldron).

How would YOU cook it? How do you like your tofu?

What should I cook it with to give it lots of flavour? (would red peppers be good?)

Thanks! : )

  1. i love tofo! put in soups of all kinds, stir fry with fav veggies and sauces, the firmer tofo is the best and wont break as easy

  2. * I like firm tofu for stir fries or veggie & tofu kebabs.

    Veggie BBQ skewers are great

[1] Chop tofu into medium sized cubes, marinate over night (I’m using Thai yellow curry).

[2] Chop veggies medium/large pieces (I like capsicum, squash, mushroom, zucchini, eggplant, cherry tomatoes, red onions)

[3] Stick veggies & tofu on skewer

[4] BBQ for a few minutes

[5] Serve with salad, leb bread or what ever you like.

*Soft tofu is great for smoothies and for baking.

    Banana smoothie

    1/2 banana

    1/2 glass soy milk

1 tsp honey (veg) or fruit concentrate (vegan)

    2 tbs fine oats

    2 tbs soft tofu

Blend it all up in a blender. It makes about 1 glass.

  3. Replaced with red meat.

  4. good choice! chop them into small cubes and bake them in red pepper paste/sauce..yummy!

  5. I like my tofu as much as I love my ludefisk; far, far, far away from me.

  6. Here's just a little thing I made one day...

    Fried "Egg" Sandwiches:

2 slices tofu (large enough to fit on bread)

2 slices whole grain bread, lightly toasted

1-2 Tbs. nutritional yeast (sometimes called savory yeast)

    1/8 tsp. salt

    1/8 tsp. pepper

1/2 Tbs. cooking oil of your choice

miscellaneous sandwich fixings (I just used soy mayo and spinach)

    Directions:

-squeeze liquid out of tofu with multiple towels (cloth or paper)

-on a plate, mix nutr. yeast, salt and pepper

-dredge tofu slices in yeast mix

    -heat oil on medium high

-slap tofu slices on the pan and brown on both sides

-toast the bread and make sandwich fixings

-lay tofu on top and serve open faced or put them together to make a "big mouth" sandwich

I also love to marinate the tofu and then bake it but I don't have those recipes with me right now.

  7. i like mine stir-fried!

i squish out all the water for about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes and sometimes marinate it overnight.  most of the time i just put a yummy sauce on top and i can skip the marinating altogether.  coconut curry is my favorite sauce to use, but spicy peanut sauce is a close second.

    mmmmm, tofu =D

  8. Never tried it. It looks nasty.

  9. I've not heard of that brand.. is it sitting in a plastic container, sitting in water? Is it firm?

I like to drain my tofu well (it's sitting in water) and mash it with a fork so  it looks like feta cheese..

The GOOD way  is to sautee chopped peppers and onions in a skillet, then add teh mashed tofu..

The Lazy way (that I usually do LOL) is to just start lightly 'frying" the tofu (without oil) and add the following seasonings (you'd add the same seasonings if you sauteed peppers and onions)

sautee tofu with the following seasonings

    black pepper

a vegetarian "poultry flavored" seasoning if you can find it

Nutritional yeast flakes (if you can find them.. whole foods has em)

    a bit of garlic powder

onion powder (if you don't have sauteed onion)

a slosh or two of soy sauce

when the tofu looks like it's almost done (dryer and different texture.. doesn't ahve that "raw tofu" look anymore) then add some chopped up tomato and/or your favorite salsa (be careful with the salsa if you DID use sauteed pepers and onions.. you don't want to tofu TOO full of peppers and onions.. if you sauteed them, then carefully spoon the "juice" of the salsa and no chunks, or  just used diced tomato.

let it cook a few minutes longer

when it's done mix in a spoon full of sour cream, and a bit more salsa if you like..

    eat it with hot tortillas!!

    YUM!!

I call it my "southwest style scrambled tofu"

  10. i used to love tofu, then i ordered it at PF Chang's and it was very good but made me sick later. so i haven't eaten it since. but i used to make it spicy with red peppers, garlic and salt and pepper. then fry it in olive oil. yum

  11. Well, my favorite tofu dish is a bit odd. It evolved from my liking fried okra, but wanting something more substantial to eat with the okra. When I was breading the okra with cornmeal, salt and a bit of raw sugar I decided to slice up a small block of tofu and to bread it as well and stick it in the frying pan with the okra.

As a result, the tofu sort of picked up the flavoring of the cornmeal and such, ended up tasting like a delicious cornmeal pancake. So then I put a little bit of maple syrup on it. Wow, did that taste good. Makes for an interesting breakfast.

I like to put tofu in a lot of different things however, stir frys are the most common and fun to make. Just take your favorite veggies and some tofu and heat it up in a wok or frying pan. I always put peppers in my stir fry, so yes they would taste good.

Also if you purchase tofu crumbles, you can add them to a chili to give it more protein and texture. If you buy some soft tofu you can scramble it in a pan and add a little soy-cheese, it turns out much like how a scrambled egg would be (texture wise), but much healthier.

  12. I googled it and found the best type of Tofu to buy and different ways to cook it... I seasoned some with some  sesame oil and seasonings and fresh ginger for couple of hours...then cut it in triangles and fried it and then   tossed it with  some steamed veggies,  hmmmm...It is an acquired taste...I would suggest doing some reading online about it..Good luck with it..

  13. I marinate my tofu in various spices, depending on what I'm going to do with it.

I drain the liquid and marinate it overnight. That's a bit extreme - a few hours will usually do, but that method just works for me.

Any-who. I like mine pan seared and I eat it that way most of the time. Every now and then, I'll batter it in wheat flour and pan fry it in a bit of oil. I think it tastes like chicken. (of course, I haven't had chicken in many years, so I don't really remember what it tastes like....but I imagine that's what chicken tastes like these days).

Yeah. Pan seared or lightly fried. Sorry for such a long-winded answer to say that.

    :-D

  14. Personally, I would slice it thick then fry them until brown on the outside and serve with sweet chilli sauce. That is how I like my tofu.

But really - you can use tofu in many ways - in soup, in stir fries, even in salad. It doesn't have much taste in itself, so needs to be in other food to give it taste.

  15. I like my tofu cut into "fingers", marinated, and grilled or barbequed.

  16. It can be used in many ways. I know the brand you've got, it's pretty firm - try the smoked version as well.

My preferred way to use it is to squeeze out excess moisture, then chop the tofu into squares; marinade them in olive oil, soy sauce and some tomato puree. Then  skewer them with onion, mushrooms, red pepper and any other veg you like on kebabs and cook them in the oven for 20  mins (more if you like, judge by appearance) or barbecue them, OR after marinading cook the squares with roast veg - roast spuds will take a little longer than the tofu, the rest of the veg takes the same time.

Be careful if you're barbecuing them - meat-eaters who say they hate tofu usually wolf the lot, saying 'Mmmm, what's this?!'

  17. i'm sorry but i don't like tofu

  18. This is my favorite way to eat tofu:  slice the tofu about 1/2 inch thick, also a portabella mushroom, and some of those jarred red peppers.  Fry it with some cooking spray, season with teriyaki sauce, and serve on your favorite bread with some wilted spinach.  Delicious!

  19. You can have a look at my recipe blog on how i cook my tofu :-

You can deep-fried it and go with dipping sauce, deep-fried it, make a slit and stuff cucumber or lettuce in it, or deep-fried and pour special peanut sauce over it, deep-fried and stir-fry with vegetable, or mashed up to make tofu ball or wonton and a whole list.

  20. I freeze my tofu to give it a good chewy texture (atually stored in the freezer).  After defrosting, I press my tofu.  Then I find a dish where I pan-fry it in seasonings.  You could be totally boring and just dredge in flour and seasonings or find a fancier dish.
