How do you locate the wires/cables necessary for installing a light fixture without cutting into the ceiling to begin with?

  1. It isn't likely that there is a wire there that you could use.

    A dedicated wire must be run from a switch (where the power usually originates) to the location for the light in the ceiling.

    If there isn't an existing light there, wires would have to be run through the wall.  Probably not something you want to pay for in an apartment.


  2. Ric is right, there is probably no wiring there.  Try using an uplight instead.  They are fairly efficient for medium-size rooms.  Here's a link:

    Home Depot and Lowe's also carry this type halogen floor lamp.

  3. Probably the next best thing is to add a light with a swag kit . Available at most home improvement stores. It's pretty simple . Just folloe the diagram that comes with the kit.

  4. Has there been a ceiling light there before, there wouldn't neccesarily be any wires there. What sort of building is it? Are there other rooms with ceiling lights is there any access above the ceiling, an upstairs room or attic space?
