How do you lock a cell phone to a certain company?

can you take any cell phone you want and lock it to a certain phone company?how do you lock a phone to sayy....virgin mobile's plan?i'm really confused..please help!!

no you cant, you have to buy an unlocked phone to do that. for example you cant buy an iphone from att and get a plan for it under verizon. you have to go online and buy an UNLOCKED phone and it usually twice as much money. youre better off buying a phone from a specific carrier and using it on that
