I have a 1995 Sanger DLX open bow ski boat. Yesterday I noticed that the steering wheel became much harder to turn than it normally is. I went under the dash and noticed that there is a grease fitting on top of the steering column. Should this be lubricated on a regular basis and if so, what type of grease should you use?

  1. Use a good quality marine grease like Lubriplate, and only use a manual grease gun...not an air assisted grease gun.

Give it a couple pumps until you feel pressure on the handle.

Given that I have a tournament ski boat myself, I have had the same problem a couple times (tight steering).  Both times it wasn't a problem with the helm station, but the cable seized/corroded down by the rudder.

There is also a grease zerk down at the rudder that needs to be lubed annually

  2. Just a small amount once a season>
