  1. The easiest way - not necessarily the best way - but the easiest:

    Buy the following things:

2 boxes of vanilla cake mix

    3 9" round aluminum/disposable pans

    1 jar of strawberry jam

2 cans of whipped vanilla frosting

    6 eggs

    Bottle of vegetable oil

    Can of Pam spray

    Strawberries

Bake the 3 9" cakes using the directions on the back of the boxes of cake mix. You will spray the pans with Pam before filling them with cake batter, and you will mix the cake mix with eggs, vegetable oil and water, and then bake them in the oven.

When the three cakes are done, ALLOW THEM TO COOL COMPLETELY.

Take two of the three round cakes and level off the tops so they are flat. You can do this by eyeballing the cakes with a knife and just carefully slicing off the rounded tops. It doesn't have to be perfect, but be careful.

Take one of the leveled cakes and put it UPSIDE DOWN on a flat plate. You want the cut side down. Spread half the jar of jam on top of this cake. Leave about 1" of cake clean/empty all around the edge of the cake. Just spread the jam in the middle and don't go all the way to the edge, leave about 1" between the edge of the jam and the edge of the cake.

Gently place the second leveled cake, cut side down, on top of the jam. DO NOT PRESS, just set it down. Then spread the second half of the jar of jam on top of this cake, again being careful to leave 1" of cake clean around the edges.

Set the last, unleveled cake on top of the jam, rounded side up. Cover the top and sides of the cake with the canned frosting. You can get a smoother look by keeping a glass of hot water next to you as you work, periodically dipping the knife you are using to spread the frosting into the glass to heat it up. This will soften the frosting a bit and help you get a smoother look. Top with a few sliced strawberries.

  2. A cake mix makes 2 layers; so if you use 2 mixes you'd have too much for 3 layers... but you can use 1 regular white cake mix, and then make a package of Jiffy cake mix (which is much smaller).  Substitute sour cream or yogurt for the liquid called for in the mixes, and be sure to beat them at least 3 min.  After all 3 layers are cooled, put them together with strawberry jam (or whipped cream with sliced strawberries).  You can frost it with sweetened whipped cream, with sliced strawberries on top
