How do you make a baitcasting reel cast farther?

I just got a new reel and i loaded it about halfway with line so if i birdnest it i could just cut the line. I wonder if thats why it won't cast farther than about 20 feet. I have the bait setup to slowly go to the ground and the spool stops turning when it hits the ground. Just looking for some tips to get more distance.

  1. I'd suggest the above, along with a good dose of pure practice.

  2. you can loosen the k**b (spool tension) on the side of the reel a little more than what it is. Another thing is to open the side plate and switch off pairs of brakes, but only on reels that have a centrifugal brake system. If its magnetic, then turn that control to make it looser. The spool tension k**b should be on the same side as the reel handle and the magnetic control will be on the opposite (if your reel has it). Chances of getting a birds nest are greater, so you need to practice thumbing the reel to reduce the chances. Dont throw anything too light though, no matter how you set the reel, it is a guaranteed backlash. lol I did that once... Good luck, tight lines.
