  1. One of the cameras I have (Canon PowerShot S3) has this feature built into it. I just tell the camera what color I want, and everything else is turned black and white. Here are some examples of photos I have taken with it. All are completely unedited...this photo os straight from the camera.

  2. for photoshop elements you start with the color digital file

    Open the photo in elements

    Duplicate the background layer

Use the lasso tool to select the person in the picture or the part of the picture you want to be stay in color ( you may be able to use the magic selections tool, brush instead, if you are using the magic selector brush just paint a squiggly line around the inside of what you want to select )

Once you have selected the area go to the select menu and choose invers, now everything you did not select is selected

go to the ehance menu - adjust color and choose remove color

Deselect the area by pressing ctr-D

If your selection is not what you want delete the background copy and start over from the step where you created it

Save under a different file name

  3. It is called "selective desaturation" and you need an imaging program for it. You select the rose, then inverse the selection and turn it to b&w.

Some free online programs will let you do that, too, for example www.picnik.com.

  4. If your photo editor supports it, layers are used. I would duplicate the original image (called the background) to layer1. Then convert layer1 into a greyscale image. Use an eraser to erase the rose part so the bottom layer (the background, color layer) shows through. Voila!
