  1. Unless you want to get it a bath, brushing is the only way.

  2. while my cats are in my lap i use a lint roller on them!

    they love it!

    and they are cheap!

( a dollar at the dollar store and one lasts for a couple weeks)

  3. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...

  4. lol, you won't get a long haired cat to stop shedding.  If you feed it hairball control formula food, it will stop shedding AS MUCH, but they will never completely stop shedding.  Get a lint roller...

  5. Excessive shedding is usually because of poor diet, as Percy said, what are you feeding your cat?  And most cat foods lack omega 3 and omega 6, essential fatty acids.  They have supplements you can give your cat, look in Pet Smart, or pet catalogs, like KV, or ask your vet, if your unsure of what to feed or what supplements to give your cat.

Excessive shedding is also caused by stress or illness. As the judges always tell us, if a cat is stressed at a show, the hair will come off in clumps as they pet the cat.  Is there stress in your household?

Even short haired cats need to be combed, and not brushed. Brushes do not get down into the fur, they only cover the top fur.

Go to the dollor store and get the package of combs, that come in different widths, then see which one works best for your cat, depending on the texture of his/her fur.  Best of luck. :-)

  6. Try changing to a higher quality food.

I personally feed Innova (dry) and Natural Balance (canned).

  7. Without shaving you cat this is the only way.  My boss gets his shaves every month and he loves it.  It doesn't hurt the cat.

  8. Brushing is the only way.  Sorry.

  9. well if you routinely wash and groom your cat, it will eventually stop shedding so much

  10. Is this a longhaired cat or a shorthaired cat?  If it's a longhaired cat you shouldn't be brushing it at all - you should be COMBING it.  Brushes do little to remove the dead hairs of the undercoat and can pull out and break the topcoat hairs.  A good quality steeltoothed comb will gently remove the dead hairs of the undercoat.

What are you feeding your cat?  A poor diet will result in a poor quality coat and excessive shedding.  If you're feeding your cat a cheap dry food made most mostly of corn and the only resemblance to meat is "Chicken Meal" or "Animal Digest" then switch your cat to a MEAT based food with little or no grain.  Also add canned food to your cat's diet - a dry food only diet is very bad for cats.

Lastly, if you're already doing all these things then a vet visit may be in order.  Poor health can also cause excessive shedding and a poor quality coat.

Edit: geezus, Justin K - MORE incorrect advice.  Hairball remedies in foods do NOTHING to control shedding.  They contain ingredients that help break down the swallowed hair so it can pass out of the cat easily as opposed to being vomited up as hairballs.
