Question:

How do you make a cat stop urinating on the bed

My cat, 4 years old, has started urinating on the bed a couple months ago.. He has never had this problem before, and does not pee anywhere else. The urine never soaked through to the mattress (so it does not smell liKe pee), and the blankets have been washed multiple times. I bought a waterproof mattress cover for the bed, and dont keep any blankets on the bed when im not sleeping in it. But he still urinates on the cover maybe once a week.

I have 3 litter boxes for 3 cats. One is the kind which automaticly scoops itself, and the other 2 are cleaned daily. I had his urine tested and he has no crystals, and no bacteria present. I tried feliway and that did no good. There has been no changes in the house, or in the litter boxes. I am getting a fourth box this weekend. Other than somehow keeping him from the bed, does anyone have any suggestions? I am so frustrated!

  1. It sounds like he's marking your bed as "his" territory.  If he's not neutered, getting that done may help.  He may have decided that he doesn't like the brand of cat litter that you use any more.  If that's the case, then Cat Attract cat litter may help.  It is formulated to appeal to cats.  I buy it at PetSmart, but I'm sure there are other places that you can find it.  Finally, just machine washing the sheets and blankets won't get the smell out.  You might not be able to smell it, but your cat sure can.  That smell invites him to continue using that spot.   Pre-treat any soiled linens in an enzymatic cleaner made specifically for this purpose.  I've used Nature's Miracle and it seems to work well, but you should be able to find a selection at any pet store.

  2. It could be attention issue. He feels he may not be getting equal amount of attention from you versus what other cats get. Also can be something like a new blanket that smells differently. Either way it's a territory (and what comes w it) claiming behavior. Mine, also adult, did it for a year and then stopped when I systematically started giving him and the rest of cats similar attention (petting one after the other for same amount of time). It may also be something totally else, but that's what happened in my case.

  3. my cat used to do that,After racking my brain for hours I came up with a possible remedy. my cat has a blanket that he sleeps on next to me in bed and I had always heard that cats won't pee where they sleep. I took his original blanket and laid it on top of our bed(in the dreaded spot where he seems to pee each night).

Initially he just smelled the blankie and laid down. It's now been 4 weeks  with his blanket on top of our bed and no accidents! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we've found the solution! This may not work with every cat, but when you're desperate- you'll try anything! or

keep the door shut or put a bowel of orange peel on the bed or in the doorway, cats hate the smell of citrus.

  4. Close off the access to the bedroom so the cat cannot get in there.  You may not be able to smell his urine on your bed but he can.

  5. i think you should take him to the vet

cats don't pee on the bed to be 'bad' or to annoy you ( unless they are un  neutered  males , then they want to mark scent )

often its a sign of a deeper illness or depression.

  6. first, cover the bed with plastic.  If any of them try to pee on the bed, carry them to the litter box.  Keep doing it until they stop peeing on the bed.  It'll take a while, but they'll learn.
