  1. There are two ways, one built-in and one intuitive.  First, the built-in one:

ALT/CTRL/NUM - produces an em-dash, while CTRL/NUM - produces an en-dash.  (Note:  "NUM -" means the minus sign on the numeric keypad.  Many laptops have a blue FN key that changes a set of keys, also with blue numbers on them, into a numeric keypad.)

Now the intuitive one.  This will set up an Auto Correct entry so the dash you want will be substituted for a pair of minus signs ("--").

In Word versions prior to Word 2007 (Vista):

    1. Click the Tools->AutoCorrect Options menu item.

    2. In the Replace text box, put a pair of minus signs.  It shouldn't matter which one you use.

    3. In the With text box, press the CTRL-key sequence from above for the dash you want.

    4. Click the Add button.

    5. Click either the OK or Close button.

    In Word 2007:

    1. Click the Office button in the upper-left corner of the window.

    2. Click the Word Options button.

    3. Click the Proofing tab.

    4. Click the AutoCorrect Options button.

    5. Continue as for the earlier versions of Word, above.

    Hope that helps.
