  1. It may be the kind of ball you are using.  In fact, I'd be willing to bet you are using one of those inexpensive balls.  They don't spin as much as the "better player balls."  That is a myth.  Spend a little extra money to get a dozen Nike One Black/Platinum balls and you'll notice how better your short game will be.  To get the ball to check, you have to place it back in your stance(off your right foot if you're right handed) and hit down on the back of the ball to create the spin.  As far as short iron shots, once again get a high spin ball.  I've gotten 4 iron spin.

  2. To put spin on the ball, you need to do two things; Firstly you need to hit the ball with acceleration. The second thing you need to do is strike the ball with a downward swing, catching the ball first and then the ground.

To check the ball while chipping, you need a slightly open clubface, hands forward and weight on your front foot, and again strike down and through on the ball - but do not release (do not let your hands catch up to the club head).

  3. Hi,

Keeping the grooves clean is very important - most golfers carry a small wet towel around with them on the course.

Also recutting the grooves is an excellent idea - a few times a year - depending on how often you play.

    Hope this helps.

  4. 1. Keep your grooves clean

    2. Hit it solid and as the club is travelling down

    3. Play a performance ball (Callaway HX Tour, Pro V)

    4. Weaken your grip

    5. Take a bigger swing than normal

    6. Use your most lofter club

Note Your ball will NOT check up with smaller swings/lower clubhead speeds the way that it will with a 100 yard Sand Wedge.

  5. In a normal swing backspin is put in the ball through the grooves in your club, if they are worn out you won't get spin.  If the grooves are good and you need more switch to a ball that gives a higher spin rate through the dimples.  A chip-shot shouldn't have backspin it is supposed to release once the ball lands.  If you are talking about a pitch shot, it is the same swing principles and thoughts as a full swing but with 1/2-1/4 backswing.

  6. hit down on the ball

  7. chipping is hard to check hard cause theres not enough swing, but to check you just need to back the ball up, swing down on it and accelerate through. Trust it. Because trying to help it will make it roll out even more. Good luck!

  8. Play the ball a little bit towards the middle of your stance and use more wrist than normal.  This will cause you to hit the ball BEFORE you take a divot. Therefore the ball will run up the club face and give the ball height and spin to fly into the green and stick your shot.  This technique will also give you more distance with all your clubs, so practice your shots and get a new feel for the added distance.

  9. You impart backspin by hitting down on the ball.   One of golf's great 'things' is that you hit down to make the ball go up.   You MUST hit the ball first;  no 'swooshing' it off the turf.
