How do you make a non- producing fruit tree bear fruit?

I heard that if you gently beat the tree about the trunk it will produce fruit the next growing season.

  2. Sounds unlikely. The first thing you have to do is determine why the yield is poor.

    The first cause could be the absence of a pollination partner. Most fruit trees are not self-fertile (many plums are exceptions). If the tree flowers but forms no fruit, this is the most likely cause.

    Check for diseases, or frost damage. Try feeding with phosphate and potash fertilisers, especially if the leaves are healthy and abundant, but flowers are poor or absent (potash is vital for flowering and fruits).
