  1. Chicken wire is a good base at can be purchased at home stores, Lowes, Home Depot, or farm supply stores.

Will need a pasting agent, lots of recipes out there, paper and lots of Patience.

    Good luck and have fun

  2. You don't say exactly what you mean by "medium" size so I'm guessing you want something about 12" tall?

If so, you can use chicken wire** or you can just use scrunched newspaper held in shape with a wrapping of masking tape or scrunched aluminum foil, etc., or even start with or add parts like toilet paper tubes or cups, etc., then tape them together for the basic shape.

**A better material than chicken wire if you're not making something fairly large is something called Wireform wire mesh (buy it at a craft, hobby or possibly art supply store --or online).  It comes in several different stiffnesses and the least stiff is called "Sparkle" I think... that's very shapable with one's bare hands and a lot of detail can be achieved with it too.

Here's the product so you can get a better idea:

As for the papier mache, there are various types of that too, and various recipes for the adhesive to use as well.  If you're item is large enough, one good thing to use besides strips or squares of newspaper is the blue "shop towels" that come on a roll and are found in automotive departments, etc.... they make the whole process go faster because they are thick, soft, and very drapable once soaked with adhesive.

Or you could use a paper pulp over the basic form instead of papier mache (or buy it at a craft store as Celluclay), or use a smooth paper clay like Creative Paperclay, or a grain-based clay like salt dough, or even a polymer clay like Fimo, Premo, or Kato, etc.

Here are some links for regular old papier mache techniques:

  3. I find the best base is to use chicken wire. You can bend and form it to your desired shape. Use gloves when handling it so you don't cut yourself. Get some nice metal cutters and you just cut it and begin forming it.

The chicken wire is not the best if you want small pieces. I assume you want something like 2 feet or more?

Once you have your "form," you papier mache away!

  4. a paste glue, chicken wire and paper.

make a frame out of the wire and keep glueing the paper on to it. then leave it harden and paint it. glue alot of paper.
