  1. concrete sidewalks are not hard to do..

just time consuming and costly if you dont have all the right tools to begin with...

unless you are doing a really big job...

you need to get bids and let the concrete contractor do it..

if you insist on doing it yourself..

you need at the vary least.. twice + 20% of boards for the total leight of the project...   most sidewalk slabs are at least least 4 inched deep...

you need to dig out at least twice that  for sandy bedding for the sidewalk to be poured into..

you need to compact this sandy bedding or the sidewalk will crack sooner then you want

you need to get a mixer...

you can get away with using a wheelbarrel.... but i would rent a mixer..

do the math and fiqure out how much material you need...

still thinking of doing it yourself?

  2. I'm not sure what you mean by paved. If you want to use blacktop or paving stones. Both of them require the same preparation. You will need to stake out your walkway and how you want it set up. Then you need to find your height, whether you want it flush with your lawn, or beds. From there you work your way down given approx 2-4" for your paving stones or blacktop (depending on which you are using) Before you put your stone or blacktop, you need to put at least 4" of Item 4. This is a compound that is used under all walkways, patios, even roads. After putting 4" down you will need to compact it. Using a plate compactor is you best bet. You can rent one from Home Depot. This will make sure your base is solid and will keep your walkway from moving for years to come. That is basically all that is involved. Most important is your finish. For you to have it the height you like, you have to dig down at least 6-8" depending on what your finish height will be. Good Luck. Oh yeah btw, hope you don't have a bad back.

  3. Sidewalks where I live are made of Asphalt.

You can not do this your self.

But  if you use concrete or pavers you can.
