we have to make a simple machine in science and my friend and i have decided to make a simple jack in the box but we have no idea how to make it!

In Science/Physics a 'simple machine' is something very specific.  It is a tool or device that provides mechanical advantage by changing the amount or direction of a force.  a lever, s***w, inclined plane, wheel, pulley, etc.  A jack-in-the-box will use several 'simple machines' in its working parts.

I would check the details of the assignment before going off and building a jack-in-the-box.  You may only be required to demonstrate the mechanical advantage that a simple machine provides - Like measuring the force needed to lift a weight directly versus the force needed to lift it with a lever and fulcrum
