Question:

How do you make a small room bigger?

My room is what you'd call a 'box room', it is about 2m by 2m.

I only have needed furniture in there: bed, wardrobe, tv stand, bedside cabinet and a chest of drawers.

I am re-decorating my bedroom at the weekend so I have decided to move stuff around too.

How can I really make use of the (limited) space?

Thanks.

Note - I don't have much to spend, £50 max.

  1. Painting the walls white, vertical stripes, or mirrors are what a lot of people do to make a room appear larger.

Organizing furniture in a certain way could help, too. If you want, place the TV on a dresser if you have one, rather than making a whole new stand for it. The chest of drawers could be replaced by getting under the bed boxes and storage chests... if you're bed is too down to the ground, you can purchase bed risers :).

  2. I solved this problem in our kitchen by painting the Walls White

  3. My room is just like yours, I was given the box room as I am the youngest and my brother wont swap with me lol, but I am having my room re-decorated soon too, I have gone with to colours, a light rose pink and a colour called beige weight, light colours always make a room look bigger, also for extra storage I have had a long shelf put up that goes right the way along one side of my room so that I can put a lot of things on it eg lights, tv etc, and also MIRRORS! I am getting about two mirrors for my room as they reflect light and because they are reflecting the room it will make it look so much bigger and the final one keep it CLEAN! Don't throw clothes on the floor and put things away once you have got them out, cute small storage boxes are a great way to do this and if you get a solid colour one instead of a clear one it wont matter what you have in there or how you arrange it, good luck with your room, hope I helped.

  4. The BEST way to make a small room appear larger is to mirror the walls.  But that's expensive.  So. . .the NEXT best thing to do is to PAINT it.  There are two options in doing this.

    1.  With "red" paint.  Yes!  Red!  It WILL make a small room appear larger!

    2.  Painting it with vertical stripes; like red and white stripes!

  5. well, you dont really need the bedside cabinet (1 item gone -more space, you could even sell it on and boost your budget), if your bed is a double -try reducing it to a single -if it is a single tyr getting one of them fold up beds so you have space when your not sleeping -this can also save you money. Try getting a smaller chest of drawers, and a smaller wardrobe, get rid of the tv stand and put the tv on the chest of drawers -now see how much more space you'll have and more money (from selling items)

hope this helped -good luck :)

  6. you manage to fit all of that furniture in a room that is 2 mtrs square?

  7. A few, well placed mirrors will help with the illusion of size.

  8. I regularly get asked this, see my column here:

As most people have mentioned, keep your wall and floor colours light and use mirrors to reflect more light and give the impression the room is bigger than it is.

The most important thing with small rooms is to keep them tidy! And that of course won't cost you a penny!

  9. put the biggest mirror on you can get in the room.

  10. I don't think you can use all of these ideas with your budget, but you could try buying some light paint. A lighter shade could make the whole room appear more airy. Or you could purchase a/some mirrors, which also have the effect of making a room look bigger.

You could eliminate some furniture, also...maybe could you put your TV on your chest of drawers?

  11. If you paint it red, it could be very cheerful.  And it will feel warmer in the winter, and hotter in the summer.  And a lot smaller all year round.  If you get the wrong shade of red, it can feel oppressive. And repainting over red will take 3 or 4 coats of any lighter color. The old adage applies - Light colors recede.  Brights or darks advance.  It's no mystery why lots of people paint their ceilings white or sky blue.

More practically, if you can stand heights, buy 2x4 lumber and extend and brace the bed legs, putting the bed up above the other furniture. Bolt a ladder securely to the bed frame.

The smallest beds sold here (other than hammocks, cradles or toddler beds) are just about 1m x 2m, so I'm surprised you've got all that furniture in there already.  Unless of course you've got a TARDIS.  :-)

  12. Move in the basement!

  13. Buy a sledge Hammer and knock down he walls !!!!!!!

  14. If you literally mean make it bigger rather than the illusion by mirrors or white paint, then get wall brackets and lots of shelves and build everything upwards rather than outwards

Your Tv can go on wall brackets too.

Don't forget you can get storage boxes for underneath your bed!
