How do you make a split rail fence?

The easiest way is to buy the rails and posts from a fence company.  A more difficult, but more satisfying way is to get some cedar logs and make your rails yourself. I got some 10 foot logs when a building lot was cleared and used steel wedges to split them into rails.  I am looking for some smaller cedar logs to peel and make into posts.

Usually you buy posts with 2 oval holes in them.  You put one rail (bought or made from tree branches) into each oval and keep going.  The rails need to be approx. the same legnth 5-6 feet long.  The post needs to be about 5 feet high, so you can sink a foot or so into the ground.
