I know how to make cranes and I'm pretty fast at doing so but in pictures I see of crane leis the cranes look like they're folded differently so that they can be stacked on top of each other.. Can anyone teach me how to fold like that so that I can make a paper crane lei?

link to the picture of the lei: http://flickr.com/photos/mrullmi/2233569974/

And if possible tell me how to string the cranes together?

FYI i'm doing this for my boyfriend's graduation (c/o 2012) :]

So time doesn't really matter. lol

Please and thank you!

  1. It looks like normal way to fold crane.  At least that is the way I fold it.  Only thing is that they dont fold the last part(where you'd fold and then pull the wings).  May be a little then leave it like that.

To string them together, I dont know for sure.  I'd say, thread the needle and push it in the buttom of the crane(where it has a hole already) and  through the top(center).  Then continue to put the next cranes on top until you have enough cranes for one string(leave extra length).

Do as many strings as you needed, then tie the left over strings(that extra length on the top) together.

This is how other people does it:

But I do different from step 11 on

Step 11: Normally they fold along the red line.  I dont.  On step 10 you see the cross line in the center "+".

I then fold the right pointy toward the center.  Do the same for all.

Step 12: I the filp the right top layer to the left, same with the back  side.

Step 13: fold the bottom point to the top(one layer only) filp to back side, do the same.

Step 14: flip right layer to the left again, same with the back side.

    Step 15: Pull and done.

With my style, you'll see that the crane head, tail, wings are the same length(or hight if not pulling).  and that makes it looks better when string together.
