How do you make a wooden half barrel for planters??

I would like to build staved barrel halves for the use of planters. Would like to know what would be the best wood to use and also would like some kind of plans to do so. I am very knowlegable working with wood, but this is one could use some help. Thank you.

  1. I think I'd have to agree with answer 2. The creation of a barrel, not only involves a species of wood, but determining the fractions to remove in angles as each stave butts an adjoining one. Then in order to be in the shape of a BARREL, one has to shape each plank, by steaming etc., all similar. Then banding has to be considered.

       Certainly a noble cause but a tedious task.
