How do you make an avater here?

Click on My Profile (upper right of screen.)  Select Edit my profile.  On the new page select the avatar option button and then (under that choice) Edit my avatar.  You'll find on the new page that there are tabs at the top that take you to all sorts of selections of how you wish to make your avatar appear.  It's sort of a hoot actually!  Have some fun with it, the price is right...Free!  ;-)  Blessings....
