How do you make an easy yet accurate sun dial at home?

What options do I have and what type of items should I use to construct this easy do-it-yourself sundial

  1. I'd use a fairly heavy disk, on a stable pedestal.  Use a triangular pointer pointing due north with the highest point positioned over the center of the sundial, and the lowest point near the southern edge.  The triangle's angle should make it point toward the north star.  If I were making one, I would use the old trial and error method...set it up, and mark on the disk when it is such and such an hour in such and such a season, monthly, or even weekly.  In that way you can make it pretty darned accurate, after a year of making the marks.


  2. Dover Publications sells a nice little book with instructions and templates for a number of different homemade sundials.

  3. Whip your p***s out and draw chalk around the shadow of it to keep track of it.
