How do you make an outdoor kitty an indoor cat?

My cat who was lost for 4 days is finally home! She was chased up a tree by a dog and a block away staying at someones home. We put out fliers today and somebody responded. Answer to prayer!

Anyway, I can't go through that again. How can I make her stay inside. We tried once but she was just so hyper and kind of got viscious with us. When we let her out she was a much happier cat. She's been home for an hour now and already making a bee line for the door when it opens. Help! I can't lose her again.

  1. 1 if she is not spayed, spay her ASAP,... this will calm her down and she will, be easier to keep inside

Take away her shoes!  I dunno how to change an animals behaviour once it's been conditioned.  My girlfriend use to put her cats on a leash and tie them to a clothes line... never lost a cat but got a lot of odd looks from passer bys.

  3. The only thing I would know to do would be just watch every time you open the doors and refuse to let her out.  She will be hyper for awhile, but eventually will settle down to the fact that she is not going out.  We walk our cats outside on halters and leashes.  You might try to train her to do that, then she can have the best of both worlds.

  4. YOU HAVE TO PUT YOUR CAT IN A BATHROOM OR A SMALL ROOM FOR A MONTH AND GET IT USED TO STAYING INSIDE NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU DON'T WANT TO YOU HAVE TO.THEN YOUR CAT WILL NOT WANT TO BE STUCK IN THE BATHROOM AND THEY WILL BE HAPPY WITH YOUR HOUSE AND IF THAT DOES NOT WORK YOU HAVE TO GET AN INVISIBLE FENCE.THAT IS A LAST RESORT

    GOOD LUCK

  5. In addition to having lots of pet toys and scratching posts, you may want to try a pheremone product such as Feliway. It's supposed to calm kitties.

  6. get some cat furniture, cat grass, toys etc to put in your house make inside so much fun that your cat won't want to go outside

  7. There are some great links on converting outdoor cats to indoor cats here:

Glad to hear you'll keep her safe and happy indoors now :).
