How do you make an overstuffed sofa modern?

my husband and I just bought a sectional for our new home, however, it is overstuffed and out dated. How can I modernize it with very little sewing skills but much determination. Thanks!

another idea was to buy a sheet to cover over the sofa

Did you purchase this used or new? If new then I question why you would choose something that is not your style. This is a big price item.

Modernizing it will come in the way of decorative pillows, area rug and your accessories.
